Article on Nanocarbon Synthesis Using Electroactive Bacteria Published in Carbon
Our article on the sustainable production of nanocarbons from fluorographite materials was recently published in Carbon. This paper represents the first route - to my knowledge - from a fluorocarbon precursor to graphene oxides and graphene quantum dot materials using only aqueous conditions, at low temperature and neutral pH.

Welcoming New Phd Student Camille Scola!
Camille Scola recently began her PhD in the team on our CNRS-funded 80Prime project BauxCLEAN. Camille is joint-supervised with Géosciences Rennes by Dr. Mathieu Martinez (right in the photo) along with myself and Frédéric Barrière - the man behind the camera.

Prof. Paula Colavita Visits Rennes!
We were delighted to welcome Prof. Paula Colavita to the lab at the ISCR, to give a talk on her lab’s many fascinating projects on carbon nanomaterial characterisation. Paula also participated at Carbon 2025 in Saint Malo - just a short train trip away from Rennes.

Arrival of New Master's Students in the Team
We are happy to welcome three master’s students in the team. Baptiste Cibron and Matthieu Laville join us for their Master 1 projects. Both will study the interactions of electroactive bacteria with nanomaterials, with different focuses on human health or material synthesis aspects.

Paper on nanoparticle - receptor interactions published in JACS AU
Our article entitled ‘Quartz Crystal Microbalance Method to Measure Nanoparticle–Receptor Interactions and Evaluate Nanoparticle Design Efficiency’ was finally published in JACS Au. Huge congratulations to everyone involved! You can see the article linked below, and also take a look at the cover art which I produced and designed using Blender to illustrate the concept of a quartz crystal microbalance allowing us to probe bionanoparticle-receptor interactions at the nanoscale.

Latest Article Published in Bioelectrochemistry
I am delighted to share our latest article in Bioelectrochemistry, entitled Fe(III) oxide microparticles modulate extracellular electron transfer in anodic biofilms dominated by bacteria of the Pelobacter genus Ok, so the title is a mouthful, but what we showed was a very interesting behaviour of a biofilm in the presence and absence of alternative electron acceptors to the anode.

Setting Up a Microbial Fuel Cell: An Absolute Beginner's Guide
Setting Up a Microbial Fuel Cell: An Absolute Beginner’s Guide So, you want to set up your first microbial fuel cell, but you have no idea where to start? That makes two of us - or at least it would, if you were talking to me from 2 months ago.
